Gilbert family grows vegetables and social media fame with suburban farm

A Gilbert family is milking goats, feeding chickens and growing its own vegetables, all in their own suburban backyard.

DaNelle Wolford, 37, said she wanted a healthier lifestyle and fell in love with urban farming.

“I was really attracted to the idea of growing our own food,” she said.

She’s not alone.

Urban farming has become popular across metro Phoenix, where community gardens continue to sprout, and beyond. And urban farms tend to attract younger people to farming.

The trick is to know the rules in your community. For instance, some communities allow backyard chickens, while others do not.
